Six tips to a professional paint job

12/8/2021

Painting like a pro is much more attainable than one may think.  A successful painting experience is always led with patience, simplicity, and the tips we have listed below.

We say patience because there will be times where you just might want the project to be over with.  This is not the case when painting.  If you get frustrated with how long it takes to paint the surface that you are painting, this often leads to applying the paint sloppily.  When this is done, paint will streak down your surface, resulting in a messy and non enjoyable process.

When painting something as large as your house, it is easy to get overwhelmed by looking at the entire project as one whole.  To avoid stressing oneself out with a large project, we advise to simplify the project into more tangible processes.  Starting with pressure washing, then caulking, then the siding, and finally any window pains and gutters.

At Tallahassee Painters Pro we work through a process in each painting job we do.  This process involves 6 different techniques that are imperative to a premium painting process.

Tip 1: Clean the surface that you are going to paint.  If painting the exterior, pressure wash.  If painting the interior, have a gentle rag (can use a kitchen or bath rag) and clean water.  Scrub until all dirt and debris are removed from the surface.  This ensures that your tape and paint are going to stick to the surface.

Tip 2: Swallow your pride and use painters tape.  Even professionals use painters tape.  You should as well when doing a DIY project.  This means thoroughly tape where there is supposed to be a line or change in color.  The style or brand of tape really doesn’t matter as long as it doesn’t let paint seep through it and sticks to the surface that it is sticking to...which should be cleaned.

Tip 3: Clean up mistakes while they are still wet.  The difference between a professional and an amateur is not that the professional doesn’t make mistakes but that they own up to it and fix them properly.  If you missed your target or splattered some extra paint on an unwanted surface then wipe it off with a damp rag as quickly as possible.

Tip 4: Remove everything from the painting space.  If painting outdoors, remove or cover any yard ornaments or other articles that should not be painted.  Especially when using a roller or sprayer, things are bound to get messy.  Take a few minutes ahead of time to cover and/or remove things that should not get messy with your project.

Tip 5: Caulk all cracks.  When caulking the cracks, you are looking for a smooth surface to paint on.  If you were to not caulk the cracks, the paint will then fill the void and not be smooth.  This also calls for runny paint which leaves streaks.  Caulk should look like a natural filler and blend the paint in well with the rest of the canvas.  No particular caulk is needed unless the surface you are painting requires a specific caulk, example: wood caulk.

Tip 6: To really save yourself, pick a powerful primer.  A strong and well made primer will help the paint stick and last for as long as you would want it to - a lifetime!  This will also help you save money in the long run for you will not have to worry about painting it again in the near future.  Of course quality of paint is a serious factor in the paint job as a whole but a nice primer goes along with the job quite well.
